Amsterdam-based Invest-NL invests €10M in climate-first VC firm Extantia Capital

Berlin-based Extantia Capital, a climate-first venture capital firm which focuses on advancing the transition to a decarbonised world, has raised €10M from Dutch impact investor Invest-NL.

Extantia, with support from investors like Anglo American and Toyota Ventures, aligns with Invest-NL’s sustainability goals and aims to strengthen the Dutch high-tech sector.

This investment underscores Invest-NL’s commitment to building a sustainable future and promoting innovation in climate-focused ventures.

Ruud Zandvliet, Principal Energy at Invest-NL says, “Our commitment to Extantia aligns with our strategic objective to organise financing for capital-intensive and impactful ventures. Extantia’s scientifically grounded approach to assessing impact ventures, coupled with robust operational support, will strengthen the Dutch investment landscape.”

“We are enthusiastic about Extantia’s potential to broaden the range of funding opportunities for hardware-based ventures in the Netherlands,” adds Zandvliet.

A climate-first venture capital firm

Launched in 2022, Extantia Capital is a climate-focused VC firm with a mission to accelerate the shift towards a decarbonised world. The firm brings together entrepreneurs, scientists, investors, and business leaders to drive this transition.

Extantia’s platform includes Extantia Flagship, a fund supporting deep decarbonisation companies; Extantia Allstars, a fund-of-funds investing in climate venture capital; and Extantia Ignite, a hub for advancing expertise in climate innovation and ESG practices.

According to the VC firm, this reflects the VC firm’s comprehensive approach to addressing climate change through investment, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.

Sebastian Heitmann, Partner at Extantia says, “We really enjoy working with value-add investors and believe that Invest-NL’s very progressive mandate is an example to follow. The collaboration has been off to a good start and we see plenty of opportunities to work with Dutch entrepreneurs.”

“Building on the strong high-tech foundation in this region, we are excited to back the next generation of founders developing sustainable infrastructures.”

Extantia Capital claims to take a rigorous approach to ensure its investments have a significant and timely impact on addressing climate change. They conduct thorough Carbon Math assessments before engaging with companies and link impact goals to fund manager compensation.

Additionally, the firm employs a comprehensive methodology to verify that new technologies have no adverse environmental or social effects.

Extantia’s primary focus areas include energy, industrial processes, buildings, transportation, and carbon removal technologies. Its portfolio companies include MAGNOTHERM, H2Pro, INERATEC, GA Drilling, BeZero, and Reverion.
