California-based Boyd introduces liquid cooling technology for EV fast charging stations

California-based Boyd, an innovator in sustainable engineered material and thermal solutions, announced that it has developed advanced liquid cooling technology in collaboration with E-valucon for electric vehicle (EV) fast charge stations.

This innovation involves a liquid-to-air cooling system for DC Fast Charging (DCFC) cables and connectors, aiming to enhance the speed and safety of charging while prioritising environmental sustainability with the use of eco-friendly coolants.

These cooling systems are regionally manufactured and tailored for EV charging infrastructure expansion in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific.

Aim of the innovation

Shammy Khan, Chief Commercial Officer of Boyd says, “Creating or using power makes heat. Doing this more rapidly and in a small space severely compounds that effect.”

“Drivers want faster charge cycles and infrastructure planners need space-saving solutions. Rapid, high-power charging in tight spaces creates a significant thermal challenge.”

“Our liquid systems reliably meet those market demands with a solution that reduces thermal safety concerns in fast charging stations,” adds Khan.

Boyd says it is committed to supporting customer success by addressing regional manufacturing needs in the electric vehicle market. They are responding to the US Department of Transportation’s Buy America standard, which is being phased into requirements from July 2024 as part of the NEVI Formula Programme.

This programme allocates $5B for expanding EV charging infrastructure in the US. Boyd and E-valucon have collaborated to meet the Buy America requirements by combining Boyd’s liquid cooling technology with E-valucon’s fast charging system, ensuring compliance and contributing to the growth of EV charging infrastructure.

E-valucon’s COO Madison Ahn says, “Boyd’s expertise in thermal solutions and E-valucon’s expertise in EV coupler solutions equip us to support the rapid deployment of reliable and accessible fast charging systems in America.”

“We’re excited to be a part of this historical movement towards zero emissions through electrification.”
