Berlin-based Enapter, a company that makes AEM Electrolysers for low-cost green hydrogen at any scale, announced that it has delivered 30 AEM EL 2.1 electrolysers and 15 DRY 2.1 dryers for a hydrogen refuelling station in Tokyo, Japan.
This development comes as part of a collaboration with the Japanese gas company Tokyo Gas. Its “Senju” station is the first commercial hydrogen fueling station that uses AEM electrolysis in Asia.
Enapter’s AEM electrolysers are used to generate hydrogen on-site for car fuelling.
The company’s electrolysers are also available in Japan in an 8-bar pressure version that meets the local criteria specified by the High Gas Pressure Safety Act, and the hydrogen generated is pure enough for fuel cells thanks to the DRY 2.1 dryers.
The Enapter electrolysers were integrated by the Japanese integration partner Inabata & Co.
Beyond the current experiment, it is intended to investigate the possible use of hydrogen in collaboration with Tokyo Gas and to conduct further hydrogen initiatives in Japan.
Tokyo Gas claims to be one of Asia’s major gas firms, with over 16,000 employees (consolidated) and an annual revenue in the tens of billions of dollars.
Decarbonising the Economy and Society
Japan says it aims to decarbonise its economy and society and by 2030, 1,000 hydrogen filling stations for fuel cell vehicles will be deployed around the country, among other things.
According to a statement, no new cars with pure combustion engines will be registered nationwide after 2035. After then, all new automobile sales will be switched to EVs. Hydrogen cars are also mentioned, which use fuel cells to power electric motors.
Sebastian-Justus Schmidt, CEO of Enapter, says, “Japan is planning enormous investments in the expansion of renewable energies and is taking on a pioneering role internationally. Hydrogen has a key role to play in achieving the environmental goals.”
“Our cooperation with Tokyo Gas opens up a wide range of opportunities for the use of hydrogen. We look forward to further cooperation and the exciting joint projects that will develop as a result, establishing a hydrogen economy in Japan,” adds Schmidt.
Brief about Enapter
Enapter claims to be an innovative energy tech company that produces highly efficient hydrogen generators, known as electrolysers, to replace fossil fuels and accelerate the global energy shift.
The company’s Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) technology allows for the series and mass manufacture of low-cost plug-and-play electrolysers for green hydrogen generation at any size and location.
Enapter’s modular solutions are already in use in the energy, transportation, industrial, heating, and telecommunications sectors across the world.
The firm’s headquarters are in Germany, while its manufacturing facility is in Italy. Its also listed on the regulated market of the Frankfurt and Hamburg stock exchanges.
