Stockholm-based Candela, a maker of long-range electric boats, announced that it has secured €25M from Groupe Beneteau, totalling the funds raised to €70M. EQT Ventures, Ocean Zero LLC, and Kan Dela AB also participated in this round.
The funding will support scaling up Candela P-12, the world’s first fast and long-range electric hydrofoil ferry.
Candela mentions in a LinkedIn post, “Our deepest gratitude goes to our customers, investors, and partners for believing in our vision. And a shout out to our brilliant team that has taken electric hydrofoiling from concept, to prototype phase, to building best-selling leisure boats, and now into the next phase—commercial passenger vessels with Candela P-12.”
What does Candela P-12 offer?
Candela P-12’s pre-production vessel, “Zero”, conducted its maiden flight outside Stockholm last November, achieving a take-off speed of 16 knots and reaching its designed top speed of 30 knots within 16 seconds.
The three carbon fiber wings beneath the hull of P-12 reduce energy consumption by 80 per cent compared to conventional fast vessels.
P-12’s advanced Digital Flight Control System ensures a smooth ride without the discomforts of sea-sickness-inducing motions, while its second vessel will soon serve Stockholm’s public transport, linking Ekerö island to the city center.
This electric vessel for 30 passengers has gained a speed exemption in the city, reducing commute times from 55 to 25 minutes, surpassing subway and bus speeds, and halving rush hour car commutes.
Gustav Hasselskog says, “Today, in many cities, roads are congested while the waterways – mankind’s oldest infrastructure – are unused for fast commuting. The P-12 offers a path to use these waterways as green highways, offering fast intra-city connections. The quickest way is often over water.”
Candela P-12 offers Shuttle, Business, and Voyager versions catering to different passenger capacities and needs.
