Dutch-based Veridis aims to normalise recycled plastics by 2030; raises fresh funding

Eindhoven-based Veridis secures fresh funding from NETZSCH and DOEN Participaties to launch MADSCAN. The funds will be used for customer pilots in 2024 and 2025 to showcase the MADSCAN technology.

Veridis plans to debut MADSCAN in the Netherlands and Germany, leveraging their advanced plastic recycling industries.

Subsequently, the company aims to expand its MADSCAN (eco)system throughout Europe, establishing a standardised quality control approach for plastic recycling in the European Union.

What is Veridis MADSCAN?

MADSCAN is a new thermal analysis technology that analyses how different plastics melt and crystallise. It identifies “unique” thermal fingerprints for each plastic type by tracking temperature changes during heating and cooling of recycled plastic samples.

This helps Veridis provide recycling companies with precise information about the types of plastics in their batches, enhancing quality control.

Jeroen Glansdorp, CEO of Veridis says, “We are incredibly excited to have NETZSCH and DOEN Participaties on board to help us take our company and our technology MADSCAN into the next phase. Together, we are building the solution to accelerate plastic recycling!”

What does Veridis offer?

According to Veridis, conventional thermal analysis struggles with large samples, hindering accurate representation of material properties. The challenge lies in the uneven heat transfer through a larger material volume.

Currently, measurements are limited to 20-50 milligrams, attempting to represent over 1000 kilograms of material, leading to inaccurate results.

Veridis addresses this challenge, currently analysing up to 30 grams per sample (a 10,000x increase) and soon scaling to 50-500 grams (a 100,000x increase) with MADSCAN.

This scalability allows accurate measurement of the composition and quality of large batches of recycled plastics, empowering recyclers to offer improved quality guarantees to brand owners for reliable and effective use of recycled plastics in meeting recycling goals.

Brief about the investors

Netzsch, a high-precision measurement system, joins forces with Veridis as a strategic investor to collaboratively enhance and prepare the MADSCAN system for full industry readiness.

DOEN Participaties, a firm that claims to be the largest impact investor in sustainable and social startups in the Netherlands, has over 25 years of experience investing in innovative ventures. The firm is fully owned and managed by the DOEN Foundation, established by the Postcode Lottery.
