Seagate’s Sustainability Technology takes the Best of Show award at the 2023 Flash Memory Summit

California-based Seagate Technology, a company that offers consumers and businesses data storage solutions, announced that it has received the Best of Show Award for Most Innovative Sustainability Technology in Data Center Storage at the 2023 Flash Memory Summit.

Jay Kramer, chairman of the awards programme and president of Network Storage Advisors says, “Circularity strategies have great success in extending the life of data storage devices. This translates into the compelling results of energy efficiency, reduction of product labor, elimination of component shortages and decreased shipping, to all create an overall sustainability strategy.”

“We are proud to recognise the Seagate Circularity Programme for extending the life of over 1 million hard disk drives and solid-state drives through refurbishment and redeployment this past year,” adds Kramer.

Diminishing electronic waste

In its Sustainable Datasphere FY2022 ESG Performance Report, Seagate Technology revealed that it successfully extended the operational lifespan of 1.16 million hard drives and solid-state drives during the fiscal year 2022.

This achievement was accomplished through refurbishment and redeployment efforts, resulting in the prevention of over 540 metric tons of electronic waste from being disposed of in landfills.

Seagate further solidified its commitment to environmental leadership and circular practices by playing a key role in founding the Circular Drive Initiative (CDI). This initiative brings together leaders from the realms of digital storage, sustainability, and blockchain technology.

CDI’s primary focus is on diminishing electronic waste (e-waste) by facilitating the secure reutilisation of storage hardware. This effort aligns with Seagate’s dedication to sustainable practices and its drive to reduce the environmental impact of electronic waste in the industry.
