Germany’s Swobbee launches online store for battery rentals, advancing climate-tech solutions

Berlin-based Swobbee, a climate-tech startup, announced that it has expanded its services to include an online shop for rental batteries, available at shop.swobbee.com

The company is thus evolving into a comprehensive battery service provider for micromobility, aligning with the growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions.

This expansion aims to cater to a broad range of customers, including existing Swobbee users, fleet operators, and private individuals, without requiring previous or future use of Swobbee stations.

First multi-vendor battery swapping station

Swobbee has introduced a multi-vendor battery swapping station for small electric vehicles. These stations are currently used by businesses for quick battery exchanges.

Currently, the company’s battery charging and swapping stations are primarily used by sharing, logistics, and delivery services to swap empty batteries in small electric vehicles for fully charged ones.

Now, the company is extending this service to the general public across the EU, allowing convenient online rental of batteries and chargers. This move makes Swobbee the first to offer a circular battery rental system for end-users.

At the launch, as a special offer, customers ordering rental batteries this year can use Swobbee stations for free charging and swapping in 2023 if available nearby.

Rental batteries

Swobbee has partnered with battery manufacturers like AES, Akku Vision, Greenpack, Okai, Segway, and Torrot to distribute batteries. They currently offer 10 different battery types for rental, compatible with a wide range of small electric vehicles and applications in Europe, including e-cargobikes.

The company provides popular battery models from AES and Akku Vision and plans to continue expanding its selection of rental batteries.

Thomas Duscha, CEO & co-founder of Swobbee says, “Whether for e-moped, e-bike, e-cargo bike or e-scooter: renting batteries instead of buying makes sense. With the new Swobbee online store, battery rental has never been easier.”

“Our customers benefit from express delivery, flexible periods and fast replacement of defective batteries. With this offer, we make sustainable micromobility even more attractive for corporate and private customers, who can buy and operate small e-vehicles at a reduced price without batteries.”

Brief about Swobbee

Founded in 2020 by Thomas Duscha and Stephan von Wolff, Swobbee claims to offer the world’s first manufacturer-independent battery-swapping system.

The company aims to build a network of battery-swapping stations to support efficient, safe, and sustainable charging operations for micromobility companies. This network creates cost savings and enhanced safety by reducing travel distances for battery swaps and monitoring charging processes and batteries.

Swobbee’s endgoal is to enable risk-free and cost-effective operations for various electric micromobility applications, including cargo bikes, scooters, kickscooters, and mopeds, contributing to the energy and mobility transition.
